Q.

Read the following source and choose the correct option below:

From the very beginning, women were active participants in the events which brought about so many important changes in French society. They hoped that their involvement would pressurise the revolutionary government to introduce measures to improve their living. They worked as seamstresses or laundresses, sold flowers, fruits and vegetables at the market, or were employed as domestic servants in the houses of prosperous people. Most women did not have access to education or job training. Only daughters of nobles or wealthier members of the third estates could study at a convent, after which their families arranged a marriage for them. Working women also had to care for their families, and look after the children. Their wages were lower than those of men.

Detailed Solution

The wages of women compared to that of men were lower.
Eighteenth-century France was highly patriarchal, and women made less money than men. Thus the social conditions for men and women were unequal. Only men had access to better or the least possible primary education and good jobs and were even given active citizenship. On the other hand, women were not allowed to read and write. They could only work petty jobs, and even in those jobs, they were paid lower than men doing the same work. Moreover, working women also cared for their families, like cooking, getting groceries, fetching water, etc.
