An AC generator may be converted into a DC generator by replacing the slip rings of an AC generator with the commutator of a DC generator.

In an AC generator, a slip ring is fixed at one arm of the loop, so when it turns by the end becomes polar opposite to the previous direction, and therefore, the current flows in opposite direction.
In the DC generator, the commutator is weakly attached to brushes and exchanges with each other after, so the current continues flowing in the same direction as the net effect is canceled out.
Therefore, by replacing slip rings with a commutator, AC can be changed into DC.
