Statement I: In the Hershey and Chase experiment, they used bacteriophages labeled with radioactive phosphorus-32 (P³²). When these radiolabeled bacteriophages infected bacteria, the radioactivity was detected in the sediment, which contained the phage DNA, confirming that the genetic material of the bacteriophage is DNA.

Statement II: In the same experiment, they also used bacteriophages labeled with radioactive sulfur-35 (S³⁵). When these radiolabeled bacteriophages infected bacteria, the radioactivity was not detected inside the bacterial cells, indicating that the protein coat of the bacteriophage (the capsid) remained outside the bacterial cell and did not enter the cell. This supported the conclusion that it was the DNA, not the protein, that carried the genetic information.
