In a resting state, neurons are polarised, meaning there is an electrical potential difference across their cell membrane. The inside of the neuron is slightly negatively charged compared to the outside. This polarisation is maintained by the movement of ions, primarily sodium and potassium, across the cell membrane. The resting membrane potential is around -70 millivolts (mV). This polarisation allows neurons to respond to stimuli and generate electrical signals when necessary.
