Genes code for characters. Each character is expressed as traits.

The alternative form of a gene is known as an allele. Allelic-genes are those which code for the same character, thus they occupy the same loci of homologous chromosomes. Non-allelic genes code for different characters and hence occupy two different positions, either on the homologous pair or non-homologous pair of chromosomes.
