The volume of blood in each ventricle at the end of ventricular systole is known as the end systolic volume (ESV). Since ventricles contract during ventricular systole, blood is ejected from the ventricles into the aorta and pulmonary trunk. The volume of blood remaining in each ventricle at the end of ventricular systole is minimum (about 50 mL).

When all four chambers of the heart are relaxed and AV valves are open, it is considered to be in a condition of joint diastole. During joint diastole about 70% of ventricular filling occurs passively. Atrial systole accounts for 30% of ventricular filling.
