Prokaryotic mRNA lacks a 5' cap and a 3' poly-A tail, while eukaryotic mRNA undergoes post-transcriptional modifications, including the addition of a 5' cap and a 3' poly-A tail.

The precursor of eukaryotic mRNA is hnRNA.

 In eukaryotes, transcription occurs in nucleus and translation in cytoplasm but in prokaryotes both transcription and translation occur in the cytoplasm.
