“The Sri Lankan Tamils launched parties and struggled for the recognition of Tamil as an official language, for regional autonomy, and for equality of opportunity in securing education and jobs. But their demand for more autonomy in provinces populated by the Tamils was repeatedly denied. By the 1980s several political organizations were formed demanding an independent Tamil Eelam (state) in northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka. The distrust between the two communities turned into widespread conflict. It soon turned into a civil war.”

Detailed Solution

Sri Lankan Tamils launched parties and struggles in Sri Lanka for the declaration of Tamil as the national language.
Sri Lankan Tamils are the country's indigenous Tamils, constituting only 13% of the total population. The Sinhala dominated Sri Lankan government introduced policies that gave preference to Sinhala-speaking candidates for government employment after a law recognising Sinhala as the official language was passed in 1956. Due to their alienation, they formed political organisations and started campaigns calling for Tamil to be recognised as an official language and to be given equal opportunities in government and academic positions. Their requests, including one for more regional autonomy, were however rejected.  By the 1980s, several political organisations had been established to advocate for the formation of an independent Tamil Eelam (state) in northern and eastern Sri Lanka.
