India occupies an important strategic position in South Asia. India has 28 states and 8 Union Territories. India shares its land boundaries with Pakistan and Afghanistan in the northwest; China (Tibet), Nepal, and Bhutan in the north; and Myanmar and Bangladesh in the east. Our southern neighbours across the sea consist of the two island countries, namely Sri Lanka and Maldives. Sri Lanka is separated from India by a narrow channel of sea formed by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar, while the Maldives Islands are situated to the south of the Lakshadweep Islands. India has had strong geographical and historical links with her neighbours.

A strait is a narrow body of water separating two adjacent landmasses. It also connects two water bodies. The Palk Strait in the Indian Ocean, separating Sri Lanka from India, is the best example. It connects Palk Bay in the southwest to the Bay of Bengal in the northeast. Some straits are navigable while some are not. The reason for this is that some straits are narrow enough to allow the passage of ships or vessels. Some are too shallow. In the case of Palk Strait, the coral reef and the shallow waters make navigation risky. Small fishing boats and vessels frequently pass by for local trade and fishing. Efforts are being put into the construction of a shipping canal, which will turn it into an international shipping channel.
