India’s Neighbours

India occupies an important strategic position in South Asia. India has 28 states and 8 Union Territories. India shares its land boundaries with Pakistan and Afghanistan in the northwest; China (Tibet), Nepal, and Bhutan in the north; and Myanmar and Bangladesh in the east. Our southern neighbours across the sea consist of the two island countries, namely Sri Lanka and Maldives. Sri Lanka is separated from India by a narrow channel of sea formed by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar, while the Maldives Islands are situated to the south of the Lakshadweep Islands. India has had strong geographical and historical links with her neighbours.

Detailed Solution

Tajikistan is to the north of India, beyond Afghanistan’s borders. So, it does not share a land boundary with India. But it has India’s neighbors, Afghanistan, and China, to its south and east. India has nine nearest neighbors. Seven of these share land borders with Indian states. The other two are island neighbors. Pakistan and Afghanistan are India's neighbors to the northwest, while China, Bhutan, and Nepal are to the north of India. Bangladesh and Myanmar are to the east of the subcontinent. Sri Lanka is to the south of India and separated by the Gulf of Mannar. The Maldives is to the south of the Lakshadweep islands to the southwest of the Indian Ocean. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal have maritime boundaries with Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia.
