In Sri Lanka, the major social groups are the Sinhala speakers, who comprise 74 per cent of the total population, and Tamil speakers, who comprise 18 per cent of the total population. Sri Lanka became independent in 1948. An act was passed in 1956 in Sri Lankan legislation to recognize Sinhala as the country's official language. Most Sinhala speakers were Buddhists, that's why Buddhism was more promoted than other religions in Sri Lanka. In jobs and educational opportunities also, Sinhala speakers were preferred. The leaders of the Sinhala Community established their dominance in the democratically elected government under their majority, intending to establish Sinhala supremacy.
