A monarchical government was established in Sri Lanka after becoming an independent country. The Governor was replaced by a Governor-General in 1948 when Ceylon gained independence from the United Kingdom. The Ceylonese monarch, the local government, and the local parliament were the Governor-principal General's sources of accountability, not London. Although the position was primarily ceremonial, it did come with "reserve powers" of the Crown that allowed the Governor General, for instance, to fire the Prime Minister.
