But the production of handwritten manuscripts could not satisfy the ever-increasing demand for books. Copying was an expensive, laborious, and time-consuming business. Manuscripts were fragile, awkward to handle, and could not be carried around or read quickly. Their circulation, therefore, remained limited. With the growing demand for books, woodblock printing gradually became more and more popular. By the early fifteenth century, woodblocks were widely used in Europe to print textiles, playing cards, and religious pictures with simple, brief texts. There was a great need for an even quicker and cheaper reproduction of texts. It could only be with the invention of new print technology.

Johann Gutenberg refined the printing technology by employing olive and wine presses and modern technological advancements. The Bible was the first book he printed and sold 180 copies in three years. Even though these books were published, the handmade front page embellishments, lighted borders, and purchaser-specified designs gave them a one-of-a-kind feel. In the 1430s, the Gutenberg Press was the first known printing press. Gutenberg's newly invented hand mould allowed for the exact and speedy production of many moveable metal types. His two inventions, the hand mould and the movable-type printing machine, significantly decreased the cost of publishing books and other documents in Europe, especially for smaller print runs.
