Even though these books were published, the handmade front page embellishments, lighted borders, and purchaser-specified designs gave them a one-of-a-kind feel. In the 1430s, the Gutenberg Press was the first known printing press. Gutenberg's newly invented hand mould allowed for the exact and speedy production of many moveable metal types. His two inventions, the hand mould and the movable-type printing machine, significantly decreased the cost of publishing books and other documents in Europe, especially for smaller print runs.
