The first Earth Summit, also known as the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), was held in Rio de Janeiro on June 14, 1992. Almost 172 countries took part, with 116 sending their leaders of state or government. The summit's principal purpose was to discuss the worldwide climatic change that is now taking place on the planet. "No actions on indigenous peoples' territories that might cause environmental damage or be culturally incorrect" were agreed upon. A significant accomplishment of the summit was the agreement on the Climate Change Convention, which resulted in the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.
