Detailed Solution

Like other minorities, Muslim customs and practices are occasionally quite different from the mainstream culture. This often becomes an excuse to discriminate against them. This social marginalisation of Muslims has even led to the ghettoisation of the community, hatred and violence in some cases. In 2005, the Government of India set up a high-level committee chaired by Justice Rajindar Sachar after realising that Muslims in India were behind in various development indicators. This committee evaluated the social, economic and educational status of India's Muslim community. The report suggested that the situation of the Muslim community in several social, economic and educational indicators is comparable to that of other marginalised groups like the SC and ST communities. For example, 25 per cent of Muslim children in the age group 6-14 years have either never been enrolled or have dropped out of school.
