Detailed Solution

Recombination of the colours of the spectrum forms white colour of the light.
To prove this, an experiment was conducted by Sir Isaac Newton. Newton took two prisms, P1 and P2, of the same material and having the same refracting angle. He passed light through a slit which fell on the prism P1. And he obtained a spectrum (VIBGYOR) on the white screen.
As shown in the figure, he removed the white screen and placed a second prism, P2, in an inverted position. The light coming out of prism P2 was almost white. This experiment proved that prism P1 dispersed white light; this prism is called dispersing prism. The second prism, P2, recombined the seven colours; hence it was called the recombination prism. This experiment proved that a prism produces no colours, and the recombination of seven constituent colours forms white light.
