Release of domestic sewage into water bodies causes

BOD is a measure of the amount of oxygen required by aerobic microbes (bacteria) to decompose organic matter. Domestic sewage primarily contains biodegradable organic matter. Bacteria utilise oxygen to decompose organic matter. This leads to a decline in the dissolved and oxygen and an increase in the BOD.
