Release of heat is called an exothermic reaction while the absorption of heat is called an endothermic reaction.
During a particular reaction, heat may either be absorbed by the particles of the particular substances being used or the heat may be released by them. The reactions that involve heat absorption are known as endothermic reactions whereas the ones that involve the release of heat are called exothermic reactions.
Example of endothermic reaction:

CaC O_{3} (s) \to CaO (s) + C O_{2} (g) ΔH = + 177.8 KJ

Example of exothermic reaction:

C H_{4} (g) + 2 O_{2} (g) \to C O_{2} (g) + 2 H_{2} O (l) ΔH = - 890.4 KJ
