Religious functionaries of Sikh gurdwaras were known as Mahants. Many local movements were led as support for the non-cooperation movement. Peasants proclaimed swaraj and believed that ‘Gandhi raj’ would begin as a result Gandhiji would help to reduce their taxes. Muslim traders and peasants in Sind ( now a place in Pakistan) were very eager about the Khilafat call. The Khilafat-Non-Cooperation alliance gave strength to the national movement.
