Reservation of seats for women exists in village panchayats. There are no reservations for women in the cabinets of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, as well as in the state legislative assemblies. Still, in Panchayati raj bodies, women are given representation by reserving their seats. The panchayat raj bodies are known as local self-government. By the 73rd amendment act in the constitution, it was added that one-third of the total seats in local self-governments had to be reserved for women, and they should be elected through direct elections. In urban local bodies or municipal corporations, more than ten seats are filled by female candidates by direct elections. In villages and urban areas, women are represented to give voice to their thoughts and problems and give them a chance to enter the political arena.
