Reservation of some seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies is one measure adopted to increase the representation of women in the political sphere.. In India, the proportion of women in the legislature has traditionally been deficient. One way to solve this problem is to make it legally binding to have a certain proportion of women in elected bodies. Representation is “speaking or acting on behalf of someone or the state of being so represented.” Women’s rights groups have demanded the reservation of at least one-third (1/3rd) of seats in the state assemblies and Lok Sabha for women. A bill with this proposal has been pending before the Parliament, but this has not been passed yet.
