Rinderpest arrived in Africa in late 1880.
In the late 1880s, rinderpest made its way to Africa. Infected cattle from British Asia were used to feed Italian troops invading Eritrea in East Africa. Invading Africa from the east, rinderpest spread west like a forest fire, eventually reaching the continent's Atlantic coast in 1892. It took five years to reach the Cape (Africa's southernmost tip). Rinderpest killed 90% of the cattle along the path ruining African livelihoods. Planters, mine owners, and colonial governments were thus able to monopolise the few remaining cattle resources to consolidate their authority and compel Africans into the labour market.
