Rinderpest started in East Africa in 1892. It had been carried by infected oxen from British Asia to feed the Italian troops' invasive African nation in the geographical region. Getting into the continent from the east, animal disease touched the west 'like a forest fire', reaching Africa's coast in 1892. It reached the Cape (Africa's southernmost tip) five years later. On the other hand, animal disease killed ninety per cent of oxen. The loss of oxen destroyed African livelihoods.
