The Rivet Popper Hypothesis was proposed by Paul Ehrlich, an American biologist and ecologist, in his 1986 book “The Machinery of Nature”. The hypothesis uses the analogy of an airplane’s rivets to explain the importance of various species in an ecosystem. Ehrlich suggests that removing species from an ecosystem is similar to removing rivets from an airplane. Loss of one rivet may not cause a great effect, but eventually, the loss of too many rivets (or species) can result in catastrophic failure. The loss of wing rivets (key species) is a more serious threat to flight safety than the loss of a few rivets on the seats or windows inside the plane.
