Detailed Solution

Rockets work on the principle of conservation of momentum.
Rockets expel gases to gain momentum. Since momentum is conserved, the rocket acquires an equal momentum in the forward direction. It gains momentum equal to the momentum of the gas expelled from the engine in the opposite direction. They continue gaining momentum while increasing speed as long as the engine runs.
