The British deployed troops to end the Bastar uprising when it began to take shape. The British encircled the Adivasi leaders' camps and opened fire as they attempted to negotiate. Then, when they marched through the villages, they publicly flayed and punished rebellious people. As residents fled into the jungles, the majority of communities were empty. The British did not recover control for three months, from February to May. They were never successful in capturing Gunda Dhur, though. A significant win for the rebels was the temporary suspension of work on the reservation and the cutting of the area to be reserved to roughly half of what was initially planned before 1910.
