Detailed Solution

Royal princes often went to the provinces as governors. The provinces in the royal kingdom were governed by a provincial capital like Taxila or Ujjain. Although Pataliputra exercised some control, and royal princes were frequently sent as governors, local customs and rules were most likely followed. Because the Mauryan empire was so vast, different parts of it were ruled differently. The emperor had direct control over the area surrounding Pataliputra. It meant that officials were appointed to collect taxes from farmers, herders, artisans, and traders who lived in the area's villages and towns. Those who disobeyed the ruler's orders were also punished. Many of these officials were compensated handsomely.
