Rural Local Government is popularly known as Panchayati Raj.
Panchayati Raj is the name given to rural local self-government. Although Panchayati Raj broadly refers to the system of local self-government, the rural local bodies are to be organised as a three-tier system, with Gram Sabha as the base in villages and panchayats at the intermediate block and district levels above it, according to the 73rd Amendment Act of 1992. Agriculture, animal husbandry, minor irrigation, minor forest produce, drinking water, fisheries, little forest produce, small-scale industries, rural housing, fuel and fodder, rural electrification, poverty alleviation programmes, education, health and sanitation, social welfare, and other matters are the responsibility of rural local self-government institutions.
