Rural local government is popularly known by the name Panchayati Raj. The purpose of creating Panchayati Raj was to administer the root level in the root itself. It is one of the self-governing systems at the village level so that the root causes can be directly addressed and administered. Panchayati Raj system was created to decentralise the power, and the constitution was amended to make the third tier more powerful and effective. Each village has a gram panchayat, consisting of several ward (village) members (panch) and a president (sarpanch), directly elected by the people living in that ward or village. The gram panchayat works under the supervision of the gram sabha, which comprises all the eligible voters of the village. A few gram Sabha togetherly form a group known as panchayat Samiti (block), and all the block or panchayat Samiti of a district together form the Zilla Parishad.
