Rutherford’s alpha particle scattering experiment was responsible for the discovery of the atomic nucleus. He discovered that an atom is composed of electrons, protons and neutrons. The centre of the nucleus consists of nucleons (proton and neutron) while the electrons are revolving on a fixed path. He conducted an experiment with gold foil where he found the nucleus is present in atoms, by the deflection of alpha rays.
