The ryots of Bengal were reluctant to grow indigo in Bengal in march 1859. This anger of peasants resulted from the refusal to cultivate indigo in Bengal. The continued cultivation of indigo damaged the field as the productivity of the land was so decreased because of the low fertility. This was the disadvantage of growing indigo that which damages the field. Moreover, no other crop can be sown in the field where indigo was once cultivated. This caused the insufficiency of crops and damage to fields; this was the reason for the refusal to grow indigo.
