Detailed Solution

Saliva is a fluid secreted by the three major pairs of salivary glands in the buccal or oral cavity. These glands are the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual present around the jawbone, jaws, and below the tongue. Other than these, several minor salivary glands are found in the buccal cavity, secreting saliva to aid digestion. Saliva has mucus that keeps the oral cavity moistened and lubricated. Higher saliva secretion helps to clear the mouth and prevents dental problems like the formation of cavities. Saliva also aids in understanding the taste of food we eat and facilitates chewing. It helps in converting the food to a semisolid form for swallowing.
