Mahatma Gandhi thought salt was a powerful symbol that could bring the country together, which is why the Salt March became a successful tool of resistance against Colonialism. Viceroy Irwin received a letter from him containing eleven demands. The demand to eliminate the salt tax was the most controversial because salt was a staple product consumed by both the rich and the poor. Irwin refused to compromise, so Gandhi organised the Salt March with the help of volunteers.
