In this period, there was a lot of conflict between social and religious reformers and the Hindu orthodoxy over issues such as widow immolation and monotheism. After the publication of the Sambad Kaumudi in 1821 by Rammohun Roy, those who adhered to the Hindu orthodoxy commissioned the Samachar Chandrika as a response to his ideas.
