Detailed Solution

Sand and water are separated by using the technique of sedimentation followed by decantation and filtration.
Sedimentation is the process by which particles suspended in water settle out of the suspension due to gravity. The particles that settle out of the suspension become sediment, which is known as sludge in water treatment. Decantation is the process of separating liquid from solid and other immiscible (non-mixing) liquids by removing the liquid layer on top from the solid or liquid layer beneath. After pouring out the top layer, tilt the mixture to complete the process. Filtration is a physical separation process that uses a filter medium with a complex structure through which only fluid can pass to separate solid matter and fluid from a mixture.
