On April 5, 1961, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the project's cornerstone. The project began in 1979 when a $200 million loan was used to expand irrigation and generate hydroelectricity as part of a development plan supported by the World Bank through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The dam's construction started in 1987. Still, the Supreme Court of India stopped the project due to worries about overpopulation displacement during the Narmada Bachao Andolan in 1995. Finally, in 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the dam.
