Sardinia Piedmont, in a diplomatic alliance with France, defeated the Austrian forces in 1859.
With the French forces on their side, Sardinia Piedmont defeated the Austrian troops in 1859. In the 1830s, Italy moved on the path of unification, led by revolutionary leader Guisseppe Mazzini. He formed secret societies to reach this goal. The revolutionary uprisings of both 1831 and 1848 both failed to achieve their target. King Victor Emmanuel II (the ruler of Sardinia Piedmont) was responsible for unifying all these Italian states. The upper classes were also in favour of a unified Italy. He was helped by Chief Minister Cavour, who sought a diplomatic alliance with the French.
