Detailed Solution

Sati was banned in India in 1829. The practice of burning widowed women was known as Sati. During ancient times young girls were married at a very early age. Widowed women who chose to die by burning on the funeral pyre of their husbands were well praised by society and were considered virtuous. Raja Ram Mohan Roy started a campaign against Sati. He showed the people that the practice of widow burning had no sanction in any of the standard ancient texts. Many British officials supported his statement. As a result, in 1829, Sati was banned.
