Savitribai Phule was hailed as a leader in women's education, and her husband, social reformer Jyotirao Phule, opened what is thought to be India's first girls' school here 171 years ago. Her spouse taught her to read and write, inspired by contemporary concepts and reformist zeal. Savitribai attended a teachers' training program and earned her teaching certification in 1847. She then served as the school's first teacher when the pair established a school for females in Bhidewada in Pune city in 1848. The team had to deal with a lot of abuse from conservative individuals who detested the notion of women attending school.
