Ecology is basically concerned with four levels of biological organisation – organisms, populations, communities and biomes.

A population is a group of organisms of the same species, living in a specific area at a specific time. 

A community is an association of the interacting members of populations of different autotrophic and heterotrophic species in a particular area.

An ecosystem is a functional unit of the biosphere in which members of the community interact among themselves and with the surrounding environment.

A biome is a vast region with specific climatic conditions. Biomes are characterised by adaptations of organisms to that particular environment.
