Broadly, genetic disorders may be grouped into two categories – Mendelian disorders and Chromosomal disorders. Mendelian disorders are mainly determined by alteration or mutation in the single gene. Haemophilia, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anaemia, colourblindness, phenylketonuria, thalassemia, etc. are Mendelian disorders. 

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is due to mutation of a gene present on chromosome 7. Fibrous cysts appear in pancreas due to this disorder. Pancreas produces defective glycoprotein that causes the formation of thick mucus in lungs, skin etc. It is characterised by abnormal transport of Cl^- and Na⁺ across epithelium leading to thick, viscous secretion.
