Nematode resistance in tobacco plants is gained by genetically introducing nematode genes in reverse orientation. When a nematode infects this plant, the nematode gene is naturally expressed as mRNA. But at the same time, the host plant also expresses the nematode gene, thus producing a complementary mRNA. These two mRNAs form a ds RNA and triggers the host defense mechanism called iRNA . iRNA destroys the ds RNA where ever produced within a eukaryotic cell.
