Detailed Solution

A gas always diffuses the area where its partial pressure is greater to the area where its partial pressure is less. The greater the difference in partial pressure, the faster the rate of diffusion. Alveoli are the primary sites of exchange of gases. Exchange of gases also occur between blood and tissues. The diffusing capacity of carbon dioxide is 20-25 times that of oxygen due to its greater solubility. The rate of diffusion is inversely proportional to the diffusion distance (rate of diffusion is faster if the respiratory membrane is thinner).
