Detailed Solution

Interferons are proteins produced by lymphocytes, macrophages, and fibroblasts when they are infected with viruses. These proteins are able to diffuse to neighbouring uninfected cells, where they induce the synthesis of antiviral proteins that interfere with viral replication. Thus, they stop the virus from causing disease. It may be noted that they do not prevent viruses from attaching and penetrating host cells but prevent their replication. There are three types of interferons: alpha interferons, beta interferons, and gamma interferons.

Interferons do not directly destroy cancer cells but they inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis.
