LH is responsible for the formation and maintenance of the corpus luteum. After ovulation, LH causes the ruptured follicle to transform into the corpus luteum, which then secretes progesterone. LH maintains the corpus luteum by stimulating it to continue producing progesterone. If fertilisation does not occur, LH levels decrease, and the corpus luteum degenerates.
If fertilisation and implantation occur, the placenta produces a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which mimics the action of LH and maintains the corpus luteum until the placenta takes over hormone production later in pregnancy.
Oxytocin stimulates milk ejection while prolactin stimulates milk secretion. Cholecystokinin stimulates the secretion of pancreatic enzymes.
