The mechanism of breakdown of food materials within the cell to release energy, and the trapping of this energy for synthesis of ATP via mitochondrial ETS is oxidative phosphorylation. Proteins and fats are also used as respiratory substrates but not as often as glucose. The energy contained in respiratory substrates is released in a stepwise manner, but not in a single step. The initial breakdown of glucose occurs in the cytoplasm through the process of glycolysis, which converts glucose into pyruvate. The pyruvate then enters the mitochondria, where it is further oxidized through the TCA cycle and the electron transport chain to generate ATP. Hence cellular respiration occurs partly in cytoplasm and partly in mitochondria.
