Zona pellucida is a glycoprotein layer secreted by the oocyte. It is present around the oocyte at the time of ovulation and fertilisation. During fertilisation sperm penetrates though zone pellucida with the help of the enzyme acrosin. After the penetration of a sperm, zona pellucida undergoes some modifications which prevent the entry of another sperm (block to polyspermy). Zona pellucida prevents ectopic pregnancy (implantation of the embryo at an abnormal site). Implantation occurs only after the dissolution of zona pellucida.
