Inbreeding does not decrease but increases homozygosity.

Inbreeding involves mating closely related individuals, leading to a higher chance of the offspring inheriting identical alleles from both parents. As a result, the frequency of homozygous genotypes increases in the
population.

The features of inbreeding are:

  • It is used for evolving pure lines in cattle.
  • It helps in the accumulation of superior genes and elimination of less desirable genes.
  • It exposes harmful recessive genes that are eliminated by selection.

(1) Inbreeding is commonly used in animal breeding to develop and stabilise pure lines or breeds. By mating individuals with similar genetic backgrounds, breeders can accentuate desirable traits and establish a consistent genetic makeup within the population.

(2) Inbreeding can lead to the accumulation of superior genes by selection of desirable traits. At the same time, it can also lead to the expression of harmful recessive alleles, which genes makes it easier for breeders to identify and eliminate them through selection.

(4) Inbreeding increases the chances of mating between individuals carrying the same harmful recessive genes. When such genes are present in a heterozygous state, they remain hidden. However, in inbred populations, the chances of two carriers mating and producing homozygous recessive offspring (affected by the harmful trait) are higher. This exposure of harmful recessive genes makes it easier for breeders to identify and eliminate them through selection.
