Detailed Solution

  • Fungi are heterotrophic, which means they consume organic molecules from their surroundings to sustain themselves. The three feeding mechanisms used by fungi are saprophytic, parasitic, and holozoic.
    • Saprophytic fungi get their food by absorbing soluble organic matter from dead and decaying matter like bread, rotting fruits and vegetables. Rhizopus is an example.
    • Parasitic fungi feed on plants and animals that are alive. Puccinia sp. and Ustilago sp. are two examples. These fungi cause harm to the host and can even kill it. In nature, parasitic fungi are mostly pathogenic.
    • Holozoic nutrition is a type of nutrition in which organisms ingest food to digest and assimilate it to release energy by respiration for daily use. Fungi are associated with other organisms such as lichens.
