Self-Help Groups are small groups of 15-20 residents.
It consists of women primarily belonging to the same neighborhood, who meet and save regularly. Members together contribute a pool of money from their savings, typically an amount varying between Rs 25 to Rs 100 per head or more, depending on their abilities. Members of the group can obtain a small loan at a low-interest rate to meet their needs. The majority of decisions regarding savings and loan activities are made by group members. If the group is regular in its savings, it becomes eligible for obtaining a loan from a bank after a year or two. The group is responsible for loan repayment.
